About Jūji Hanazashi
Jūji Hanazashi (Cross Flower) is a traditional sashiko pattern created by stitching a grid of horizontal and vertical lines, then adding diagonal stitches that connect the corners. Together, they form delicate flower-like shapes with small crosses at their centres.
The surrounding Hakkō (Octagon) motifs represent eight-sided stars, a symbol of balance, harmony, good fortune and prosperity in Japanese culture.
Historically, patterns combining flowers and interlocking crosses were embroidered as protective talismans, believed to bring abundant harvests, good health and lasting happiness. Today, they continue to express the timeless beauty, precision and symbolism that define the art of sashiko.
